In the northeast of the country, the sandstone Ennedi Massif has been sculpted over time by water and wind erosion into a plateau featuring canyons and valleys that present a spectacular landscape marked by cliffs, natural arches and pitons. Thousands of images have been painted and carved into the rock surface of caves, canyons and shelters, presenting one of the largest ensembles of rock art in the Sahara.
The site illustrates ecological and biological processes in terms of species and habitat adaptation to post-glacial climatic changes.
They sustain a large diversity of plants, birds and marine life including dugong endemic species of freshwater fauna and flora dating from the Tertiary period.

A superlative natural phenomenon, Lake Ohrid provides a refuge for numerous endemic species of freshwater fauna and flora dating from the Tertiary period. Situated on the shores of the lake, the town of Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Built mainly between the 7th and 19th centuries, it has the oldest Slav monastery St Pantelejmon and more than Byzantine-style icons dating from the 11th to the end of the 14th century.
In the shallow waters near the shores of the lake, three sites testify to the presence of prehistoric pile dwellings, and the small Lin Peninsula is the site of the remains of an Early Christian church founded in the middle of the 6th century. Located in a strange lunar landscape of great geological interest, this site has one of the most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world.
More than 15, drawings and engravings record the climatic changes, the animal migrations and the evolution of human life on the edge of the Sahara from BC to the first centuries of the present era. This unique archaeological and ethnological reserve, located in the Northern Territory, has been inhabited continuously for more than 40, years. It is a unique example of a complex of ecosystems, including tidal flats, floodplains, lowlands and plateaux, and provides a habitat for a wide range of rare or endemic species of plants and animals.
The fossil remains of a series of lakes and sand formations that date from the Pleistocene can be found in this region, together with archaeological evidence of human occupation dating from 45—60, years ago.

The migration of the palaeotropical arid flora: Zygophylloideae as an example
From the humid tropical rainforests of the Amazon to the temperate treetops of the Pacific Northwest, forests are incredibly dynamic and diverse environments; they provide warmth, shelter, water and food, and so are havens for a multitude of plants and animals. There are over 60, different tree species in the world and natural forests can be made up of tens, hundreds or even thousands of different species.
Many forests are so-called biodiversity hotspots — they are absolutely packed to the brim with life. Rainforests are the undisputed champions: a single square kilometre of Amazonian rainforest can harbour up to different tree species, including metre-tall giants encased in their own collection of vines, mosses and bromeliads. These towering titans and the fertile forest floor at their roots are a treasure trove of wildlife, from monkey-eating eagles and dazzling macaws to diminutive but deadly poison-dart frogs and a kaleidoscope of butterflies and other insects that fill the air like animated confetti.
The migration of the palaeotropical arid flora: Zygophylloideae as an example. Systematic Botany, 37 4 The rate and direction of biotic exchange between the Palaeotropical arid floras of Asia, Africa, and Australia is poorly understood because of a lack of phylogenetic hypotheses for relevant plant groups. Periodic aridification may have facilitated migrations of arid-adapted plants between southwestern Africa and the Horn of Africa as recently as the last glacial maximum, allowing further exchange with the arid floras of Asia.
However, no conclusive evidence of the age and direction of such migrations have been documented. We use a molecular phylogeny of the Zygophylloideae to infer a biogeographic scenario for the arid Palaeotropics, using relaxed clock dating and likelihood and parsimony based ancestral area reconstruction methods. We infer up to five migrations across the African continent in contrast to just one each to Australia and Asia from Africa.

The Arman flora from the volcanogenic-sedimentary beds of the Arman Formation is systematically studied using materials from the Arman River basin and the Nelkandya-Khasyn interfluve Magadan oblast, Northeastern Russia. Seventy-three species of fossil plants belonging to 49 genera are described. They consist of liverworts, horsetails, ferns, seed ferns, cycadaleans, bennettitaleans, ginkgoaleans, czekanowskialeans, conifers, gymnosperms of uncertain systematic affinity, and angiosperms.
The Arman flora shows a unique combination, with relatively ancient Early Cretaceous ferns and gymnosperms occurring alongside younger Late Cretaceous plants, primarily angiosperms.
